Local action solving global issues Here are some of the ways the Senegal Health Institute is contributing to the achievement of the eight UN Millennium Development Goals targeted for 2015: MDG Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. SHI promotes and supports optimal maternal nutrition for mothers, infants, and young children along with education on breastfeeding. We have several large sustainable community gardens that provide fruits and vegetables for families in the community. The food grown in these gardens provides a range of nutritional needs for families that may not otherwise be able to include these foods in their daily diet. MDG Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education. SHI does not work directly with primary education but our efforts to sustain healthy families improve a child’s chances of attending school. MDG Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women. The SHI is a strong advocate for family planning, empowering women to make their own choices on when and how many children they want to have. MDG Goal 4: Reduce child mortality. The SHI Helps families learn necessary skills and basic health knowledge in the care and recognition of the onset of illness for newborns and children under the age of five. We promote immunizations for all Senegalese children. MDG Goal 5: Improve maternal health. SHI is laying the foundation for excellent prenatal, birth, postpartum and effective emergency care with well-trained birth attendants. This contributes to reducing the maternal and neonatal mortality rate. MDG Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. SHI contributes to the fight against HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases by educating the community on prevention measures and providing treatment. We actively inform women on feeding practices that reduce the transmission of HIV from mother to baby. We disburse insecticide treated nets to families to for malaria prevention. MDG Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainability. SHI focuses on improving sanitation of health facilities throughout the Casamance Region. MDG Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development. SHI concentrates it’s efforts in southern Senegal bringing a global awareness about the needs and poor conditions of this rural area.
